The Winds of Winter February 2021

A publication of Windsor Medical Center

Windsor Medical Center and Colonies have received the second round of COVID-19 vaccines from our pharmacy partners at Absolute. The second administration for most of the residents and staff was given on January 28th, 2021. Our third clinic will be on February 18th, 2021 for any residents or staff members who still need the second vaccination. Residents and staff have tolerated the vaccinations well and we are very thankful for the continued efforts made to vaccinate and protect our residents. While we understand that this has been a very difficult and trying time for residents and families, we appreciate your continued support and compliance with the current COVID-19 visitation restrictions. We are looking forward to slowly reopening visitations for the residents as we know it is very important to keep everyone connected. Windsor staff are dedicated to keeping everyone safe and also recognize that socialization and visitation is a priority. As more information is released we will be sure to update everyone!

Stay Well!

Did you know: Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” in French.

  • With Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of Lent, a 40 day period of fasting before Easter, Mardi Gras is the “last hurrah” of sorts, with participants indulging in their favorite fatty foods and drinks before giving them up.
  • You’ll hear laissez les bon temps rouler (pronounced lay-say le bon tom roo-lay) over and over again at Mardi Gras celebrations. It means “let the good times roll” in Cajun French.
  • The biggest Mardi Gras celebration in the U.S. takes place in Galveston, Texas and the biggest in the world takes place in Rio De Janeiro.
  • It is rumored that in 1872, when Grand Duke Alexis (brother of the apparent heir to the Russian throne) visited, he and his welcoming crew passed out gold, green and purple beads. They were the colors of his house and later came to symbolize the festivities. -Gold, green, and purple are the official colors of Mari Gras and each have their own meaning. Gold= power; Green= faith; Purple= justice
  • New Orleans has been celebrating Mardi Gras with parades since 1837. The first floats appeared in the parades in 1857.
  • There are more than 70 secret societies– or Krewes– involved in the Mardi Gras festivities. Each Krewe builds a float to represent a specific theme on parade days.
  • It is illegal to ride on a float without a mask on. The law came into effect to allow people to associate with anyone they wanted to, without social barriers.

LAUGHING MATTERS

Driving through Southern California, I stopped at a roadside stand that sold fruit, vegetables, and crafts. As I went to pay, I noticed the woman behind the counter was painting a sign. “Why the new sign?” I asked. She said, “My boyfriend didn’t approve of the old one.” When I glanced at what hung above the counter, I understood. It declared: Local Honey Dates Nuts.

IRRESISTIBLE IRONY
About a year had passed since my divorce, and I decided it was time to start dating again. Unsure how to begin, I thought I’d scan the personals of my local newspaper. I came across 3 men who seemed like they’d be promising candidates. A couple of days later, I was checking my answering machine and there was a message from my ex-husband. He said “I was over visiting with the kids and noticed you had some ads circled in the paper. Don’t bother calling the guy in the second column. I can tell you right now it won’t work out. That guy is me.”

CHECK-OUT ROMANCE
I met my husband while I was working at a science library. He came in every week to read the latest journals and eventually decided to take out the librarian instead of the books. After a year and a half of dating, he showed up at the library and started rummaging through my desk. When I asked him what he was looking for, he didn’t answer. Finally, he unearthed one of the stamps I used to identify reference books. He said “Since I couldn’t find the right engagement ring, this will have to do,” and firmly stamped my hand. Across my knuckles in capital letters, it read NOT FOR CIRCULATION.
THE 6TH GRADER QUIZ
A teacher asked her 6th-grade class what their definition of love was. Here are a few of their responses.
Tabitha- “Love is when grown-ups put their faces together in a yucky way.”
Johnny- “Love is when mommy leaves daddy his favorite chicken piece for him to eat.”
Marg- “Love is when grandpa cuts grandma’s toenails for her because she can’t do them by herself anymore.”
Susan- “Love is even when they fight, mama and papa still end the night with a kiss and say 3 magic words: “I love you.”
The moral of the story: seen through the eyes of childhood innocence, love is giving all you have to someone you care about, without expecting anything in return. Love is above all things: It is pure, simple, and natural.
